Many people who follow the ketogenic diet (aka keto) are obsessed with its ability to help you lose weight quickly—and keep it off. Now, new research has found that the low-carb diet may have one especially huge perk going for it: It might burn 10 times more fat than a standard American diet. That’s the major finding from research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews. For the study, scientists took 30 adults who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, a group of health conditions that increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. They then randomly put them in three groups: One group ate a ketogenic diet but didn’t exercise, another ate a standard American diet and didn’t exercise, and a third that ate a standard American diet and exercised for 30 minutes a day for up to five days a week. (The researchers didn't measure how many calories each group was … [Read more...] about The Keto Diet Might Boost Your Metabolism 10 Times More Than the Standard American Diet

Fat balls are officially the latest healthy-snack craze, taking over health-food blogs, Instagram feeds, and Pinterest pages alike. Though they've been popular among keto dieters for a while now (they're also called keto balls, just FYI), fat balls are quickly winning over the rest of the health crowd as a no-bake, minimally-processed snack that offers high amounts of healthy fats, protein, and a bit of fiber, along with little or no sugar. But what are fat balls, exactly? Though they may resemble chocolate truffles, the typical fat ball actually begins with a nut-butter base, followed by a heaping of ground flax or seeds. For flavor and sweetness (sans sugar!), people often mix in spices like cinnamon and vanilla. Coconut oil is another common ingredient. Depending on the recipe, fat balls can pack from 50 to 150 calories per piece, with the average ball weighing in at around 100 calories. Thanks to the nut or seed butter, you'll get at least five grams of … [Read more...] about What Are ‘Fat Balls’—And Can They Help You Lose Weight?

I hate diets—especially rigid ones that cut out entire food groups and require tracking numbers.Restrictive diets don't seem realistic to me in the long term, and I've heard of so many people gaining the weight back when the diet is over—sometimes even more weight. I don’t like denying myself. It makes me want that banned food so much more. I believe in subtle, moderate lifestyle changes that add up over time and become the new normal.Sounds reasonable, doesn't it?That philosophy hasn't worked. My weight has slowly crept up about 15 pounds since I met my boyfriend six years ago and moved in with him three years ago. (It’s not his fault. Really.) That weight gain isn’t as obvious on my 5’11” frame as it is for other women, but I can’t fit into my fancy Joe jeans comfortably. I haven’t worn them in at least two years. The same goes for my pencil skirts and form-fitting dresses.RELATED: Is THIS Responsible for Your Weight Creep?Plus, … [Read more...] about ‘I Tried The Ketogenic Diet For Weight Loss—Here’s What Happened’
Low-carb diets like Keto, Atkins, and Paleo are huge, but it’s understandable that you might not want to be on them forever. After all, carbs are pretty delicious and it’s crazy to think that you might never, ever enjoy bread again. That said, people usually lose weight when they ditch carbs, so it’s normal to worry that you might regain weight that you’ve lost when you go off one of these diets. People tend to lose weight on low-carb diets because carbohydrates are stored with water, says Beth Warren, R.D.N., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living A Real Life With Real Food. “Once you eat less carbs, your body depletes the excess water weight and that results in weight loss,” she explains.
