Each month, we get real talk on relationship problems from three of the gents who put the "men" in Men's Health. This month, we asked: "My dog sleeps on my bed. My new new boyfriend isn't into it. Now what?" (Get the latest health, weight loss, fitness, and sex intel delivered straight to your inbox. I'd advise the latter. Who knows, maybe the guy will be cool with it eventually.Related: Ask the Guy Next Door: When Guys Don't Kiss You During SexPaul Kita, MH senior editor: TEACH FIDO A NEW TRICK.Well, yeah, of course he isn't into it. Nothing like fooling around and coming across a paw. Train the dog to sleep in its own bed. Because, let's face it, three's a crowd. And as a bonus, you'll all sleep better with more … [Read more...] about ‘I Sleep With My Dog But My New Guy Doesn’t Like It—Now What?’
Dog sleeps in my bed
Every night, a 45-pound, 3-year-old Dalmatian/Heeler mix shares my bed. We’ve had the same bedtime ritual for years: I give her a treat, she “gives me five” (with one paw), then “gives me ten” (with two paws), and then the lights go out.Recently, however, my dog did something that made me wonder if sharing my bed with her was a good idea. We were playing outside when she cut her ear. I took her inside so I could clean her wound. Immediately, she bounded into my bedroom and jumped on my bed, smearing blood all over my comforter. As I scrubbed blood out of fabric, it dawned on me that my dog is actually pretty gross. She plays in the dirt, chews her nails, eats cat vomit, regularly steps in poop, and drinks out of the toilet bowl. And I’m sharing my bed with her every night. Was it actually healthy for me to sleep with my dog in the same bed?I Googled “is sleeping with your dog unhealthy?” and was met with conflicting results. Some sites … [Read more...] about Is Sleeping With Your Dog In The Bed Bad For Your Health?
My husband Chris’s parents are really sweet people. But for some reason, embarrassing and unpleasant things just seem to happen to me when they’re around. The first time Chris and I ever stayed with them, we said we would sleep in separate beds. We were dating at the time and figured they would dig that…but of course Chris snuck into my bed in the middle of the night. We were so busted the next morning when his mom came to wake me up and, bizarrely, her son was snoring away in bed next to me.RELATED: The Scary Way Your In-Laws Affect Your MarriageThen there was the time I spent two hours at their place with my shirt completely unbuttoned. They were too polite to say anything…or maybe they thought it was the latest style? Either way, I nearly died when I later discovered I’d been flashing my lacy red bra at my father-in-law while we discussed the weather. And then, of course, there was the time I forgot Chris’s dad is deathly allergic to peanuts and … [Read more...] about 7 Women Share the Most Effed Up Things That Have Happened at Their In-Laws’ Houses
Actress Olivia Munn's design aesthetic can be described as follows: “I hate clutter.”She says this while perched atop a floral-print Ektorp couch deep in the bowels of the Burbank Ikea. We have come here to find two items—a tray and a nightstand—to finish off her bedroom. Up to this point, Munn's mostly been clowning around: “You’re not legally allowed to shoot raccoons with a BB gun,” she tells an unwitting Ikea clerk at the information desk. “You can shoot squirrels, though, so we’re looking for a place to store them, like a tray. Can you direct us?”But when I bring up clutter, the 31-year-old star of the upcoming comedy Magic Mike turns serious.“I grew up in a military family, and everywhere we went, we collected stuff,” she says. “There were knickknacks all over the place, all those little ceramic houses lined up like you were in a store.” As a consequence, Munn’s bedroom—and, actually, … [Read more...] about My Bedroom: Olivia Munn
My girlfriend's dog always sleeps in her bedroom with us (housemates' rules). The pooch watches us having sex—and that freaks me out. What can I do? Answer: You can start by knocking boots at your place whenever possible. When you're stuck at hers, try moving the action outside the bed room. (Shower sex, anyone?) On special occasions, offer to put Sir Barxalot up for the night at a kennel while you whisk your woman off to a hotel room. For a long-term solution, ask if you can buy the pooch a superdeluxe crate and face it away from the bed. No matter which option you choose, be sensitive about it. We women are defensive about our furry companions. The last thing IT you want is for her to have to choose between you and the pup. Trust me, buddy—that decision would leave you howling in protest. … [Read more...] about My girlfriend’s dog always sleeps in her bedroom with us (housemates’ rules). Recently I launched a survey about pets & sex - that's right, I'm studying the sex lives of women and men who live with dogs and cats. My curiosity started a few years ago when a good friend of mine talked with me about her struggles dealing with her cats during sex with her boyfriend. It was easier for them to stay over at his apartment, she said, because at hers she hated having sex in front of her cats. And if she locked them out of her bedroom during sex, then the needier cat would meow and scratch at the bedroom door. It was frustrating for everyone involved - people and pets. Then this Fall I adopted a dog and other dog owners starting asking me whether I would let the dog sleep in bed with me. Soon, stories started pouring in from friends - tales about what they do with their dog or cat during sex (being a sex researcher, I hear tons of stories that people don't always feel as comfortable telling others). There were great stories of people distracting their pets with toys, … [Read more...] about SEX: When Dogs & Cats Get in the Way…
Here’s a story that should make workers who answer emails until the middle of the night take heed (and it may also make Samsung feel a little better about its exploding phones). Wiley Day, a 32-year-old middle school behavioral specialist from Huntsville, Alabama, was jolted in his sleep after the dog tag he was wearing around his neck got caught on a set of prongs that had disconnected from an extension cord attached to his charging iPhone. At that point, the chain acted as a conductor, leading to a severe charge in his neck instead of his iPhone. Day’s description of what happened next should be enough to alarm anyone who has done the same thing in the past. The shock was “the eeriest, darkest, most demonic thing you could ever experience,” Day told the Washington Post. “I don't have enough adjectives to describe it."After he was shocked, both literally and figuratively, he was thrown from his bed and, subsequently, couldn’t feel a thing. … [Read more...] about Man Electrocuted By iPhone Charger While Sleeping
Last winter, Tiger Woods and his harem of honeys titillated the nation with so many sordid stories that the oddest of them all was nearly overlooked: Woods's rumored recreational use of the prescription sleep medication Ambien. You could almost hear the collective "Huh?" as people tried to imagine how a widely prescribed (and seemingly benign) insomnia drug could produce an aphrodisiacal haze ideal for crazy sex romps. Of course, Woods isn't the only celebrity whose pill-popping has publicized Ambien in ways its designers never intended. In 2006, U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy blamed his disorientation on the drug after he smashed his Mustang into a security barrier near the Capitol building. Lindsay Lohan cites Ambien as the trigger for her first stint in rehab--this after she took it, fell asleep on the floor next to a hotel bathtub, and woke only when the water overflowed. Ambien (generic name zolpidem tartrate) was the first of a revolutionary class of sleeping pills that today includes … [Read more...] about The Weird and Dangerous World of Sleeping Pills
No matter where a girl grows up in the world, there’s a very good chance that she will be inundated with endless myths and misconceptions about menstruation, as no bodily function—with the exception of childbirth, perhaps—is more universally misrepresented and ubiquitously tabooed. From whence comes life, also comes our biggest source of shame. The cause of this stigma is truly perplexing. After thousands of years of menstruating, humans should probably be over the sight the blood itself, the odor, pain, and the waste it creates. And we certainly shouldn’t be mystified by the nature of the act, as almost every mammal on the planet operates on a cycle, from the tiniest fruitbat to the great blue whale herself. And yet—there are still places in the world where women miss out on opportunities, are denied access to school and jobs, and in some cases, become a man's property the moment her first cycle begins. For Menstrual Hygiene Day, WomensHealthMag.com looked … [Read more...] about Around the World in 28 Periods
Use these steps to create the optimum sleeping environment. There are many elements that you have control over that influence your ability to sleep. This includes things such as the amount of light both natural and artificial, the bedroom temperature, the quality and type of mattress you sleep on, the amount of noise, who you sleep with, what you eat before bedtime and whether or not you or your spouse snore. You obviously can’t control all the causes of insomnia but you can increase your chances for sleep success by taking positive action in creating the best sleeping environment. 1. Darkness matters. Sleep in complete darkness or with as little light as possible. If you get up to use the bathroom in the night and switch on the light, you are actually messing up your sleep cycle since melatonin production is switched off when exposed to light. To prevent this sleep interruption, sleep experts recommend using a very dim … [Read more...] about Is your alarm clock keeping you awake? Seven Sleep Success Steps
