Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a form of intermittent fastingResearch is limited as to whether it will help you lose weightNutritionists say if it curbs unhealthy nighttime snacking, it could be a good thingIf the idea of counting calories to lose weight sounds like the absolute worst, a buzzy concept called time-restricted eating (TRE) might be more up your alley.Time-restricted eating is basically a form of intermittent fasting, which has gained traction thanks to diet books such as The 5:2 Diet and The 8-Hour Diet. Based on the theory that most of us spend way too many of our waking hours munching away, this diet method is as simple as shortening the number of hours during the day that you eat. That could mean eating only between noon and 7 p.m. or 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. (it's up to you to decide how many hours you want to eat or fast per day). But the greatest benefits of time-restricted eating seem to occur when you stop eating earlier in the day.For example, in one new … [Read more...] about What Is Time-Restricted Eating, And Can It Help You Lose Weight?

Setting a big weight-loss goal is great. But it’s important to be realistic, because it’s not like you’re going to shed 20 pounds in one week—or even five.“I always remind my patients that they most likely didn’t gain all of their weight overnight, therefore it's unrealistic to expect that they’ll lose it overnight,” says Maya Feller, RD.Making a lifestyle change—which is what lasting weight loss requires—takes time and effort, so setting small, realistic goals will help you avoid disappointment. “Instead of focusing on the end result—for example, losing 20 pounds—focus on losing a single pound. Next, focus on losing a another pound,” says Keri Gans, RDN, author of The Small Change Diet. “Success feeds success. The more successful you are with your goals, the more likely you will stay motivated.”So what's that mean for your goals of fast weight loss? And how soon can you expect weight-loss … [Read more...] about 5 Things That Can Affect How Quickly You Lose Weight

A mere five years ago, skipping meals was a top diet taboo. Now it's the core of an increasingly popular (and increasingly research-backed) weight-loss approach. Intermittent fasting—periodically eating very little—is not only not bad for you, it may lower blood glucose levels and insulin resistance and reduce inflammation and cardiovascular risk. Why? How? Theories abound, but some experts believe fasting puts your cells under mild stress, just as exercise taxes your muscles and heart, ultimately strengthening them and making them more resistant to disease. And that's not all, says Courtney Peterson, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the department of nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. "Studies suggest you keep more muscle and lose more fat than on other diets, even if you lose the same number of pounds." That's because after about 12 hours of fasting, you run out of stored energy from carbs and start burning stored fat. (Hit the reset … [Read more...] about Everything You Need to Know Before You Try a Fasting Diet to Lose Weight
The question: Sometimes, it feels like men can lose weight so much more easily than women can—is there any evidence to back that up?The expert: Mitzi Dulan, R.D., author of The Pinterest DietThe answer: You're not imagining things. Frustrating as it is, there are a couple of reasons why it's harder for women to drop pounds. For one thing, men tend to have more muscle mass than we do. And since more muscle means a faster resting metabolism, men's bodies naturally burn calories at a faster rate. "We can be working out and changing our diet, but it's going to take a little bit longer to see those results," says Dulan. There's also a psychological factor working against women: Research shows that women usually have more of an emotional attachment to food than men do—which makes it that much harder to follow a strict healthy-eating plan. This also gives men the edge if they do have slip-ups: Women are more likely to take an all-or-nothing approach and eat badly for an entire day … [Read more...] about Is It Harder for Women to Lose Weight?
Sugar, as many of us know by now, is a key contributor to rising obesity rates not only in the United States but globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that since 1980 worldwide obesity has doubled and that in 2014, global numbers were at 1.9 billion adults being overweight with 600 million of those considered obese. When we swap out sugar-laden soda, energy, and sports drinks for fresh, clean, calorie-free water, we are automatically reducing our calorie and sugar intake. A study published in 2007 in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1) came to the conclusion that sugar intake, fructose in particular, plays a part in the rise of cardiovascular disease, which in turn suggests that fructose may also play a role in obesity, which is linked to cardiovascular disease. More studies need to be done to prove the hypothesis, but it seems that the rise in sugar intake corresponds with the rise in people who are overweight and diabetic. So, … [Read more...] about Does Drinking Water Help You Lose Weight?
Have you ever tried honey and cinnamon for weight loss? Individually, honey and cinnamon have been proven to be healthy ingredients. They both have some beneficial health properties, but there isn’t sufficient scientific evidence to prove that the combination of these two ingredients helps in weight loss. Now, research is being conducted to find out if the combination of honey and cinnamon is effective. Research does suggest that regular intake of cinnamon may help manage weight by stabilizing blood sugar and enhancing digestion, while honey acts as an appetite suppressant. However, before consuming the honey and cinnamon mixture, you need to know there are two types of cinnamon—cassia and Ceylon. Of the two, Ceylon cinnamon is more beneficial when consumed on a regular basis. To use honey and cinnamon for weight loss, you can either drink cinnamon honey tea, use it as a topping for cereals and nuts, or just eat it on its own. For now, it’s safe to … [Read more...] about Honey and Cinnamon for Losing Weight: How Does It Work?
