The claim: Recently, a lot of research has hinted that eating breakfast could help trim your waistline. Most of these studies suggest that a morning meal increases your metabolism throughout the day, or lowers your calorie intake later on. But two new papers say these breakfast/weight-loss links may be bogus. The research: Among roughly 300 overweight or obese adults trying to drop a few pounds, those who ate breakfast every day for 16 weeks lost no more weight than those who skipped their morning meal. (That study was produced by a large cohort of American researchers.) A separate UK study—this one involving lean adults—found eating breakfast was associated with more physical activity, but that a morning feast didn’t have any effect on the breakfast eater’s metabolism (a.k.a., her body’s ability to burn calories). What it means: For the most part, studies that suggest eating breakfast can help you lose weight are … [Read more...] about What’s The Deal With Breakfast—Can It Help You Lose Weight Or Not?

By Maya Rhodan for Time.com.Researchers from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom found that, despite the popular belief that eating multiple small meals a day will help you lose weight, counting calories is the most effective way to drop pounds. "The size or frequency of the meal doesn't affect the calories we burn a day," said the study's lead researcher Dr. Milan Kumar, according to Medical News Today. "But what matters most for losing weight is counting calories."The study, which analyzed 24 women of varying weights, looked at the number of calories burned by those who ate two meals a day when compared to those who ate five meals and found no measurable difference in metabolism. Both groups burned the same amount of calories per day. The study also found that eating multiple times a day can increase health risks for the obese. The obese women in the study who ate five meals a day actually increased the likelihood of inflammation linked to diabetes and heart … [Read more...] about Study: Frequent, Small Meals Will Not Help You Lose Weight
Sugar, as many of us know by now, is a key contributor to rising obesity rates not only in the United States but globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that since 1980 worldwide obesity has doubled and that in 2014, global numbers were at 1.9 billion adults being overweight with 600 million of those considered obese. When we swap out sugar-laden soda, energy, and sports drinks for fresh, clean, calorie-free water, we are automatically reducing our calorie and sugar intake. A study published in 2007 in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1) came to the conclusion that sugar intake, fructose in particular, plays a part in the rise of cardiovascular disease, which in turn suggests that fructose may also play a role in obesity, which is linked to cardiovascular disease. More studies need to be done to prove the hypothesis, but it seems that the rise in sugar intake corresponds with the rise in people who are overweight and diabetic. So, … [Read more...] about Does Drinking Water Help You Lose Weight?
There is a lot of information out there about the relationship between various foods and weight loss or gain, as well as about the effects of the way various foods on human behavior. Recent research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at the effect that the aroma of olive oil had on the brain and if those stimuli could trigger responses (increased cerebral blood flow) in certain key areas of the brain. The researchers evaluated 11 subjects who consumed either plain, low-fat yogurt or low-fat yogurt combined with a fat-free extract of olive oil. The subjects did not know that the olive oil extract was fat-free. After analyzing the groups’ brain activity, the researchers found that the group eating the yogurt with olive oil extract had more activity in their cerebral blood flow—an area of the brain that is typically stimulated by eating fatty foods, despite the fact that the extract was fat-free (this is known as the taste cortex area of the … [Read more...] about Can Just Smelling This Food Help You Lose Weight?
