Finding the perfect gifts for tweens can be quite difficult. They’re no longer little kids, and they’re very particular (and vocal) about their likes and dislikes. So you don’t want to get anything that they will consider “babyish.” But, on the other hand, they aren’t quite ready for the gifts that are popular with teens.(The 21-day plan in Love Your Age is the life-changing reset every 40+ woman needs!)You probably tell yourself that if all else fails, you can always get them a gift card (which most kids this age will gladly accept); however, a personal gift is so much better. To help make your gift shopping a little easier, we’ve rounded up some choices that get the thumbs-up from 10-year-olds. … [Read more...] about 15 Best Gifts For 10-Year-Olds And Other Hard-To-Buy-For Tweens

Many cyclists want to buy used bikes, but don’t have many good—or at least trustworthy—options. You can find used cycling gear organized by industry pros at face-to-face markets—think swap meets, sporting goods consignment stores, and a few bike shops that sell second-hand bikes (like Portland’s Sellwood Cycle and Boulder’s Community Cycles)— but the lion’s share of used bike sales start online, through Craigslist and eBay.While the goods are cheaper than new, there are risks: fraud and counterfeit, for two, and the possibility that you’re buying from a thief who’s using the Internet to anonymously fence stolen goods. Aside from the “ick” factor of buying a stolen bike (not to mention potential safety issues that might arise during any in-person transaction), criminal law provides few remedies for buyers of stolen goods, which, when found, are often confiscated without compensation. A few weeks ago, Rob Lawson, a … [Read more...] about Where to Buy a Used, Not-Stolen Bike
Maryland is about to become the first state in the country to ban the practice of adding arsenic to chicken feed, now that a 2012 bill passed by the state legislature has gone into effect. The ban, implemented on January 1, 2013, will protect Maryland's drinking water supplies and the environmentally sensitive Chesapeake Bay from a toxic chemical linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes in humans, as well as reproductive problems in animals. What the FDA Is Ignoring Could Give You CancerThough arsenic can exist in everything from drinking water to brown rice, meat and poultry are some of the leading sources of dietary exposure. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that nearly half of all chickens tested have absorbed inorganic arsenic, the most toxic form, in their liver. Based on that finding, the agency asked Pfizer to stop manufacturing Roxarsone, the arsenic-containing drug that's added to feed to fatten chickens and give meat a bright pink hue. Pfizer did suspend … [Read more...] about Where To Buy The Healthiest Chicken
Where to buy the best fish? That's a tough question, given the complicated nature of sourcing seafood. Recent reports show seafood fraud is a major problem, in that people aren't always getting what they pay for. An even greater concern involves the fact that we're fishing our oceans dry, damaging vital habitat young fish need to thrive and survive, and killing lots of non-target species in the process. In May, Greenpeace released its 2013 Carting Away the Oceans report, an analysis that rates major food retailers on their methods of obtaining fish to sell in popular stores. Available online, the report makes a powerful tool for consumers wanting to make smarter seafood choices. The good news, Greenpeace says, is this report—the seventh edition—includes many reasons to smile. For instance, Trader Joe's used a combination of progressive sourcing policies, joined political initiatives to protect oceans, and eliminated red list items (some of the most threatened fish) to jump up … [Read more...] about Where to Buy the Best Fish

Baking from a box isn’t ideal, but it has its plusses when you’re pressed for time—or if you’re more of a cook than a pastry connoisseur. The problem is, many store-bought baking mixes are filled with unhealthy stuff.“Typically you’re buying a bag of refined flour, sugar, salt—all the things that make food taste good,” says Christy Brissette, RD, president of 80 Twenty Nutrition. “But from a nutrition standpoint, aren’t the greatest.”The artificial colors, emulsifiers, and artery-clogging partially hydrogenated oils don’t help things, either. Yes, you can give a gift card without looking lazy or impersonal, says Lizzie Post, coauthor of Emily Post's Etiquette, 18th edition. The secret, she explains, is to think about what your friend has going on in her life at that moment. Is she remodeling her bathroom? Get her a gift card for a home-improvement or home-goods store. Then buy an actual card to go with the gift card (instead of using the cheesy sleeve it comes in) and write a personal message. Tell her why you picked that specific store ("I know you're training for the marathon and thought you could use some new tunes to get you through those long runs!"). Never apologize or make excuses such as "I didn't have time to pick out a real gift since I've been so slammed at work." And even if the dollar amount is written on the card, never include the receipt. … [Read more...] about Gift Etiquette: Is a Gift Card Ever Okay?

(Natural News) Disarming American citizens has never been easier, at least in Los Angeles, California, where hundreds of local residents recently lined up to hand over their firearms in exchange for Target gift cards.According to reports, many of the participants in L.A.’s annual gun buyback program waited in long lines like trained zombies for the opportunity to give up their guns to officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (L.A.P.D.). Handguns, rifles, and so-called “assault” weapons were all included among the contributions. For each rifle and handgun that was handed over, individuals received a Target gift card in the amount of $100. For each assault weapon, the reward was $200, even if the weapon in question was worth far more on the market. The event was praised as a positive step in removing dangerous weapons from L.A. streets, even though every firearm handed over was likely not owned by a criminal. Meanwhile, actual criminals were nowhere to be found in … [Read more...] about LAPD convinces citizens to surrender their self-defense firearms in exchange for TARGET gift cards
In French, sous vide means under vacuum. Sous vide involves vacuum sealing the food, putting it in a water bath, and cooking it at a regulated temperature. It ensures food is fully cooked while retaining moisture. A slow cooker, on the other hand, requires cooking at a low temperature and is time consuming. Since the food remains sealed, the condensation hampers the taste of the food, and so nowadays, more people prefer using the sous vide over a slow cooker. After discussing the differences between the sous vide and slow cooker, you will definitely want to buy a sous vide cooker. If you are planning to buy one of these, Amazon is offering great discounts on sous vide. Sous vide is a unique method of cooking that gives different and better results. The flavor and texture of the food cooked in a sous vide cannot be compared to other cooking methods.
