Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet starts strict, but the purpose is clear: to help kick-start your weight loss and stabilize blood sugar levels to minimize cravings. Your 2-week goal on Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet: Eat three meals and two snacks every day, made up of satisfying portions of lean protein, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and good unsaturated fats. What you don't get to eat: starches (no bread, pasta, or rice of any kind) and sugars (no fruits and fruit juices, cakes and cookies, wine and beer). After 2 weeks, you'll be motivated and more in control, so you'll move on to Phase 2 of the diet and gradually start to reintroduce some of the off-limits foods, like whole fruits, whole grain breads and whole wheat pasta, and certain root vegetables, such as sweet potatoes and carrots. Once you've achieved a healthy weight, you'll move on to Phase 3. At this point you'll fully understand how to make good food choices while maintaining that healthy weight. Sleep isn't my thing. I'm a night owl by nature, and I usually crawl into bed around 1 or 2 AM. My kids wake me up at sunrise, and I stumble to the kitchen in a fog, brew a pot of coffee, and promise myself I'll go to bed earlier that night. But it never happens. Burning the midnight oil is my "me time," and I'm hard-pressed to give up those hours when the house is finally quiet and I can put on my headphones, listen to throwback playlists, and write in peace. Sleep, for me, is like eating kale or jumping rope—I'm aware it's good for me, but there are a thousand other things I'd rather do.As it turns out, I'm not alone: Approximately half of Americans don't get the recommended 7 to 8 hours per night, and the CDC has recognized our collective lack of sleep as a public health epidemic. Sleep can lower your immune function, ding your productivity, and even raise your risk of cancer, diabetes, and depression. Apparently my sleep-when-I'm-dead philosophy could actually kill … [Read more...] about I Tried A 2-Week Sleep Cleanse. Here’s What Happened.
Humans have been experimenting with tonics since the beginning of time. From the fountain of youth to alkaline water to kale juice, we’re always searching for that magic potion that will restore health and wellness, ward off illness, and make us look and feel 10 years younger. But what if that potion isn’t so mysterious? What if it’s just… lemon water? (Learn how bone broth can help you lose weight with Women's Health's Bone Broth Diet.) Lemon water has been touted as a health and wellness aid for years by some M.D.s, clean living advocates, and, of course, celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow. And unlike packaged juice cleanses that supposedly brighten your skin and age you backwards, lemon water won’t break the bank. It’s cheap, it’s easy, and it seems safe (as long as you don’t try to exist on lemon water alone)—but does it really work wonders? Some proponents of lemon water claim that it aids digestion, detoxifies the liver, erases … [Read more...] about ‘I Drank Lemon Water Every Day for 2 Weeks—Here’s What Happened’
I've always been a healthy eater. Never drank soda, cooked from scratch, and avoided processed foods. So I was skeptical that the elimination diet in the The Whole Body Cure program—a new health plan from Prevention that focuses on healing inflammation by identifying food sensitivities—could help me. But I was desperate: For the past 5 years, I've had joint pain in my knees and my hips so severe that it would wake me out of a sound sleep. At just 47 years old, it hurt just to put my feet on the floor in the morning, and lying down was horrible. If you're dieting, you may want to think about taking 2 weeks out; it could help you to lose the pounds and keep them off. This is the conclusion of a new study, which found that continuous dieting may actually hinder weight loss. Study leader Nuala Byrne, a professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Tasmania in Australia, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the International Journal of Obesity. It is estimated that every year, around 45 million people in the United States go on a diet, primarily with the aim of losing weight. But, as many who have dieted will be well aware, sticking to a diet plan 7 days per week can be a challenge. The new study, however, suggests that we should not feel guilty about taking a short break from dieting, as it may actually help with weight loss. Prof. Byrne and colleagues came to their findings by enrolling 51 obese men aged 25 to 54 years who were a part of the Minimising Adaptive Thermogenesis And Deactivating … [Read more...] about Boost weight loss by taking 2-week dieting breaks, says study
Fruits and vegetables are a pivotal part of a healthful diet, but their benefits are not limited to physical health. New research finds that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption may improve psychological well-being in as little as 2 weeks. Study leader Dr. Tamlin Conner, of the Department of Psychology at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and colleagues found that young adults who were given extra fruits and vegetables each day for 14 days ate more of the produce and experienced a boost in motivation and vitality. The researchers recently reported their findings in the journal PLOS One. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, adults should aim to consume around two cups of fruits and around two to three cups of vegetables daily. One cup of fruits is the equivalent to half a grapefruit or a large orange, and one cup of vegetables is proportionate to one large red pepper or a large, baked sweet potato. As part of a healthful diet, fruits and … [Read more...] about Eating more fruits, vegetables boosts psychological well-being in just 2 weeks
