ahhh sensation of your first step in a well-cushioned shoe? But it’s a tricky balance. Goldilocks-like runners want a shoe that has just the right amount of cushioning—not too little, not too much. The shoes shown here undeniably popped in the cushy department, more so than any other category, in both our lab and the wear tests. These seven are the cushioned running shoes you’ll want to sink your feet into.
When you’re a runner, you’re obsessed with shoes. You need them to be able to stand up to long, tough runs; short, easy runs; and speed workouts that make your legs feel like lead and your heart pound out of your chest. To say they have to take you far is a huge understatement.Shopping for a runner means being a shoe constructing detective. When you’re trying on pair after pair, there are a few criteria you need to look for: ample toe length and width (those babies swell, especially in the heat), a seamless upper to avoid uncomfortable rubbing, a contoured arch,…... Think twice before switching your sneaks. Changing to less cushioned running shoes could cause you to overexert certain parts of your legs and feet, says a new study in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. In an analysis of 19 runners, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse found that those who landed on their forefoot experienced 11 percent more force on their Achilles each step compared to those who landed on their heel. That’s about 7,000 extra pounds of force over a mile for a 150-pound runner, researchers say. What’s going on? The Achilles tendon and calf muscles take on a greater load…... [Read more]
Your lucky pair of running shoes might not be so charmed, after all. According to a new study from the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory in Luxembourg, running day after day in the same sneaks can lead to results-wrecking injuries. For the study, researchers gathered intel on the running habits, injury rates, shoe usage, and cross-training routines of 264 recreational runners. During the 22-week study, 87 of the subjects suffered from at least one running-related injury that prevented them from logging miles for one day or more. While their running frequency, speed, and mileage varied, the injured runners tended to have one…... [Read more]
Running shoe materials and designs are getting more advanced, but they’re still man-made products with distinct lifespans.“These new shoes are just like any other chemical compound under constant pressure,” says Claire Wood, senior product manager for performance running at New Balance. “They will break down over time.”Logging miles in worn-out shoes not only slows you down, but it can also increase your risk of injury. Before you shell out money for new kicks, though, use these five guidelines to find out if yours are ready for retirement or if they have some mileage left in them.Related: THE 21-DAY METASHRED—an All-New-Body-Shredding…... Its interior is lined with plenty of soft materials that, when combined with the sole's balanced profile and flexible forefoot, results in a smooth, steady ride, free of the stiffness that plagues many motioncontrol shoes. Except for noting the shoe's heavy heel, testers had nothing but positive things to say.
